コミック単行本『バガボンド』の装丁を長年担当していて、この「WATER」と「墨」と名付けれた2冊の画集制作にも携わることになったが、企画が上がって出来るまでには３年以上が必要だった。推敲を重ね、いろんな視点で試み、どこかを1カ所でも変えると、その変化が全体に及び最初からやり直しの連続で、さながら武蔵の修行のような３年間だった。本文の編集バージョンだけでも５、６タイプあって、レーザーライターで出力したページ数は数千を超えていた。途中で何度も挫折しそうになったが、最終的には井上さんにも喜んでいただき、これ以上のものはないと言えるくらいの仕上がりになったのではと思う。どのページにも新しい発見があるが、とりわけ「墨」で鮮明になる過剰なほどの描き込みや「WATER」でみられる現代的な配色の筆使いとなど、井上劇画の凄さを再認識させられる画集だ。

圧倒的画力で緻密に描き込まれたコマは見返すたびに奥行きが深まり、極限まで削がれた言葉は読み返すたびに雄弁さを増していた。「バガボンド」を読むということは、そんな「尽きることのない鑑賞の喜び」なのだと思う。井上さんのこの2冊の画集は、そんな必然が生み出した結果に過ぎない。この画集が紡ぎだす光と陰には〈新しい解釈〉と〈新しい興奮〉に満ちている。
